The Moth Orchid Brooch

Handmade Moth Orchid Brooch in magnesite and niobium with sapphires by Janet Barber FIPG

I have always loved the form of the Moth Orchid, Phalaenopsis. No matter what colour variation, I find the form elegant and graceful. The pale green tinged are a particular favourite, as indeed are other green flowers, so I made this for the GCDC awards 2025 using the delicately hued Magnesite semi precious stone to carve the petals and buds. The open flower is hinged at each petal base. Anodised Niobium is hand fabricated to form the centre adapted petal and set with lab grown sapphires and the whole is then held on a lightweight titanium frame.

I was grateful to have been awarded three awards for this piece at the 2025 GCDCawards.
